Start Over on PMSS

From Pulsed Media Wiki

Start over deletes everything in a Pulsed Media seedbox account and gives you a new, empty account on a different server, straight from the service page with no support ticket. It cannot be undone. Use it when your server stays slow after a restart and you do not need your files: the new account goes to a different server with room for new accounts. The old account stays in place until the new one answers; in two internal test runs the whole move took under four minutes.

Before you start

  • To keep your files, copy them off first over SFTP or with FileZilla.
  • To move to a different server with your files, open a support ticket instead. A move done through a ticket can include your data, as described under migrations and resets.
  • If you only want default settings back, Recreate account rebuilds the account on the same server and keeps your data folder.
  • If something stopped working, try Restart account on the service page first. It changes no files.

How to start over

The opened Start over row: what is kept, what is deleted, the count of start-overs in the last 12 months, a checkbox, a covered server name box and a red Delete everything and start over button
The Start over row opened on the service page. The server name box is covered here; on your page it shows the name to type as a hint.
  1. Log in to the client area, open Services → My Services and click the service.
  2. In the Start over row, click Start over on a new server. It opens and shows what is kept, what is deleted, and how many times the service has started over in the last 12 months.
  3. Tick the box confirming that everything in the account will be deleted.
  4. Type the server's name into the box. It is the first part of the server address, before the first dot, and the box shows it as a hint.
  5. Click Delete everything and start over and confirm the dialog.

All three confirmations are checked again when the request arrives. If one is missing, nothing is deleted.

What is kept and what is deleted

Kept Deleted for good
  • this service, its plan and its price
  • your username and password
  • your billing
  • every file in the account
  • every setting
  • every installed app and container
  • every torrent

The new account gets the Free Bonus Disk it has earned under the current formula, as any new account does. On an older service that can come out lower than the bonus it had built up.

What happens next

The new account is created first, on a different server. As soon as it exists, the service page shows the new server's address, and the Start over row says the account is being set up on a new server. The other account actions on the service page wait until the move has finished.

The old account is removed only after the new one answers. If the new account cannot be created, nothing is deleted and the page says so. If the new address still does not work two hours after the click, open a support ticket: the old account and its files are still in place. The attempt still counts toward the limit, because the new account was created.

Limits

  • Once per 30 days and three times per 12 months per service, counted on rolling windows. A move counts once the new account has been created. When the limit is reached, the row shows the next possible date.
  • The service must be active, with no cancellation request open, and your client account must have no overdue invoice.
  • Not within 30 minutes of a recreate request or a password reset.
  • A user logged in to someone else's account sees the row only with the View & Modify Product Passwords permission.
  • The row appears only on services where starting over is available.

After starting over

  • Point your SFTP and FTP clients, and anything else that connects to the seedbox by its address, such as Sonarr, Radarr or a remote torrent client, at the new server address.
  • VPN profiles belong to the old server. Set the VPN up again from the new one; the WireGuard setup guide shows how.
  • Install the media stack again with the button on the seedbox dashboard, then set up your containers the way you had them.
  • If something looks wrong, open a support ticket rather than starting over again; the 30-day limit applies.

Troubleshooting

The page says What it means
To confirm, type the server name, tick the box, and confirm the dialog. One of the three confirmations was missing or the server name did not match. Nothing was deleted; try again.
This account has started over as often as allowed for now. Next possible on date. The 30-day or 12-month limit is reached. It opens again on that date.
This service has a cancellation request. Please withdraw it first, or open a support ticket. Withdraw the cancellation request, then start over.
Your account has an overdue invoice. Please pay it first. Pay the overdue invoice, then start over.
This account was recreated in the last 30 minutes. Wait half an hour after a recreate. The same applies after a password reset.
This account is being set up on a new server. A move is already running. Wait until it has finished.
The new account could not be created. Nothing was deleted. Open a support ticket.
Starting over did not go through. Nothing was deleted. Try again later, or open a support ticket.

Start over or recreate?

Recreate account Start over
Server same a different one
Files in data kept deleted
rTorrent torrent list kept deleted
Old settings and apps reset, old copies kept in a backup folder deleted
Password a new random one unchanged
How often once per 30 days once per 30 days, three times per 12 months

Use Recreate first: it resets the setup and keeps your files. Start over is for when you want a different server, for example because yours stays slow after a restart, and have already copied off what you need. To move and keep your files, open a support ticket instead.

Restart, Recreate and Start over sit on the service page, so a fresh account does not wait on a support ticket. See the Pulsed Media seedbox plans.
