Recreate Account on PMSS

From Pulsed Media Wiki

Recreate account rebuilds a Pulsed Media seedbox or storage box account on the same server, with the same username and fresh default settings. Your files stay where they are. The data folder is moved into the new account, not copied: the move is a single rename, so it takes the same time for a multi-terabyte account as for an empty one, and needs no extra disk space. Use it when the setup is tangled beyond a quick fix or when you want a clean start; for one stuck app or a dashboard that does not load, restarting the account is enough.

How to recreate the account

  1. Log in to the client area, open My Services and click the service.
  2. In the Recreate row, type the server's name into the box. It is the first part of the server address, before the first dot, and the box shows it as a hint.
  3. Click Recreate account and confirm.
  4. Click show in the Password row to see the new login. If it still shows the old one, reload the page.
The Restart row with a Restart account button, and the Recreate row with a text box and a Recreate account button
The Restart and Recreate rows on the service page. The box in the Recreate row takes the server name; it is covered in this picture.

The seedbox stops while it is rebuilt. The web panel and rTorrent are started again automatically, usually within a few minutes. Accounts with a very large number of folders take longer, because the rebuild checks folder permissions one by one.

What stays, what is reset, what is deleted

Stays in place Reset to defaults Deleted
  • everything in the data folder
  • the rTorrent torrent list, so rTorrent picks up its torrents again
  • the login password, for the web panel, SSH, SFTP and FTP alike (a new random one is set)
  • rTorrent settings and the settings of the other clients (qBittorrent, Deluge)
  • apps and containers you installed in your home folder, such as the media stack or Docker
  • custom rTorrent and web server settings
  • the watch folder and shell settings
  • the backup folder left by an earlier recreate, if there is one

Nothing in the "reset" column is thrown away. The old copies stay in the backup folder described below.

Your old files

Everything that was not carried over waits in /home/backup-yourusername. Only your account can open it. Reach it over SSH or SFTP (for example with FileZilla) and copy back what you need; plain FTP cannot see it, because FTP only shows your home folder. The folder counts toward your disk space until you delete it.

The backup folder is deleted when you recreate the account again, or when the service ends. Copy back anything you want to keep before then.

Limits

  • Once per 30 days per service, and only while the service is active.
  • Logged in as a user on someone else's account? The row shows only with the View & Modify Product Passwords permission.
  • Some servers need a software update first. If yours does, the page says so; open a support ticket.

Restart account

The Restart account button in the Restart row of the service page restarts everything that runs in your account. Every program in it stops, SSH sessions included. Then rTorrent, the media stack apps you set up with the dashboard installer, and the web panel start again. Other programs you started yourself stay stopped until you start them. Files and settings are not touched.

  • It usually takes a couple of minutes.
  • It works from the client area, so you can use it when the seedbox dashboard itself does not load.
  • You can restart once every 10 minutes.

Is recreate the right tool?

Problem Try first
rTorrent, the web panel or an app stopped responding Restart all my services or Start stopped apps on the seedbox dashboard
The dashboard does not load, or several things are stuck at once Restart account on the service page
One setting or file is broken and you know which Fix or remove that one file over SSH or SFTP
The whole setup is tangled, or you want defaults back Recreate account
Your server stays slow after a restart and you do not need your files Start over (a different server; deletes every file)
You want an empty account on a different server and have copied off what you need Start over (deletes every file)
Anything else, or you are unsure A support ticket

After a recreate

  • My apps are gone. Installed apps and containers start fresh. Install the media stack again with the button on the dashboard and set up containers the way you did before; their old files are in the backup folder.
  • My old password stopped working. The recreate set a new one. It is in the Password row of the service page.
  • My public web folder or ruTorrent settings look reset. Their files are kept inside your account: on current accounts in .local/share/pmss in your home folder, on older accounts in the backup folder (www/public and www/rutorrent/share). Open a support ticket and the files can be put back in place.
  • I need a custom rTorrent setting back. Copy .rtorrent.rc.custom from the backup folder into your home folder, then restart rTorrent from the dashboard.
  • The page says recreate is not available on my server yet. Open a support ticket.
  • Something looks wrong after the rebuild. Open a support ticket rather than recreating again; the 30-day limit applies, and a second recreate deletes the backup folder.

A recreate gives you a clean, default seedbox in minutes, keeps your files where they are and needs no support ticket. See the Pulsed Media seedbox plans.
