Dedicated server

Pulsed Media offers three tiers of dedicated hardware: Minidedicated servers (MDs), managed dedicated seedboxes (dediseedboxes), and custom-configuration dedicated servers. All run on PM-owned hardware in PM's own datacenter in Helsinki, Finland.

A dedicated server means the physical machine is yours alone. No other users share its CPU, RAM, storage, or network bandwidth. Compared to shared seedboxes, a dedicated server gives you root access, your own IP address, and the ability to install anything you want on the machine.

When a dedicated server makes sense

Shared seedboxes handle most use cases. A dedicated server makes sense when:

You need root/sudo access to install software that shared plans cannot run (custom VPN, game servers, self-hosted services)
You want guaranteed disk I/O not affected by other users' workloads
You run enough torrents that a shared plan's resources are a bottleneck
You want to resell or host services for others
You need a dedicated IP address for private tracker whitelisting

If you mostly run torrents and pull files over SFTP, a shared seedbox at a fraction of the cost is probably enough.

Minidedicated servers (MD series)

The MD series are compact NVMe servers. Each unit is a separate physical machine with its own CPU, RAM, and NVMe storage. They are built on mITX motherboards in PM's custom sheet-metal chassis.

MD servers run Debian, come with PMSS pre-installed (including rTorrent, Deluge, and qBittorrent), and include root access. They are replaced as a unit if hardware fails. The NVMe storage means random I/O is fast, which matters for torrent clients managing thousands of files.

Managed dediseedboxes

Managed dediseedboxes are larger dedicated servers configured specifically for seedbox use. PM handles the OS, software stack, and maintenance. You get root access but do not need to manage updates or monitoring.

All managed dediseedboxes include a dedicated IP, root/sudo access, and PM's dual-level rTorrent redundancy system. The F21-MDS-42TB runs RAID5 for drive redundancy. The others run RAID0 for maximum space and speed.

Custom dedicated servers

For customers who need more storage, more bandwidth, or specific hardware configurations, PM builds custom dedicated servers. These range from repurposed enterprise hardware to current-generation AMD EPYC systems.

Custom servers ship with Debian and root access. PMSS can be installed on request. The 10 Gbps and 20 Gbps network connections are unmetered. These servers sit on the same network and in the same Helsinki datacenter as the shared seedbox fleet.

Infrastructure

All dedicated hardware runs in PM's own datacenter at Kiviaidankatu 2, Lauttasaari, Helsinki. PM owns the racks, cooling, network equipment, and servers. The network runs on AS203003 with transit from FNE Finland and IP-Only.

Dedicated servers connect to the same core Brocade MLXe-8 router as the rest of the fleet. Server connections are 1 Gbps (MD series, dediseedboxes) or 10-20 Gbps (custom servers). Power comes from the Finnish grid (99.99995% reliability, Fingrid 2023/2025). Cooling uses an economizer with outside air.

For most seedbox users, a shared plan is enough. The shared plans run on the same datacenter hardware and network. The main reasons to go dedicated are root access, guaranteed resources, or running services that require a dedicated IP.
